There is often a huge misconception or misunderstanding around the use of technology in the safety industry.
What kind of technology can we use? How do we use it? Why should we use it?
In 2013, I started my first business and found myself designing my business website, discovering tools, and gaining tech skills I never imagined possible. I have gone on to grow my tech skills and used it to stand out as a business owner and safety professional.

With technology, here are some of the things I was able to achieve:
- manage my life, work, and business
- move my company online making it 90% digital. Surely some aspects of safety can only be done physically ????
- run an online training business allowing me to make impact and reach people outside my immediate vicinity and reach
- help other safety businesses move their training arm online
- train teams to go digital
- influence and introduce the use of software and tools to help improve safety compliance
- show teams how they can manage tasks and collaborate using the power of automation …and the list goes on.
You too can use technology but I know what’s stopping you, how you can overcome that barrier, and get started using the everyday tools readily available to you, and premium solutions.
Here’s what I know could be stopping you
1. Fear of Technology.
Many have declared it is often complicated and difficult to use. If anything, many have found frustration using it. I have been there. When I first started, there were moments where I wanted to fling my laptop out of the window. There were also countless moments of despair but I stuck with it. Today people say I should be in IT not safety. They are that impressed.
2. Fear of Affordability.
People think it’s expensive to use technology but the truth is, there are lots of free tools you can start with, then upgrade once you can afford to. You will find there are many platforms, all priced from low to high – budget for everyone.
3. Fear of Underachieving.
Truth is, many think a lot of things are impossible. Can this tool help us achieve our desired result? Can this feature be built into our existing system? Experience has taught me that if you can imagine or desire it, you can achieve it – as long as you have time or money or both.
3 proven ways you can get started with technology and digitalise safety
1. Use the everyday tools available to you.
The Gsuite for example is very powerful and comes with lots of free apps even on the basic Gmail account. If you want more functionality, you can always upgrade to the business version. I have used Google for Business for years and it helps make working with my team a lot less stressful. I shared one of the ways we use Gsuite to manage one of my businesses in this postthis post.
2. Use ready-made software.
These abound. Ranging from a few hundred pounds a year, to tens of thousands of £. Many are designed to function as just a learning management system, or a safety management system, or simply for incident management, or project management or ALL IN ONE! Choosing the right platform is a task on its own, as you need to get it right from the get to. On this blog, I will be reviewing many of the popular choices and guide you in making your choice.
3. In-house solutions.
This is my favorite but it can easily become expensive. It has it’s pros and cons as you get to work on the features you need, build a solution that meets your unique needs as a business or safety department. This means you have to consider maintenance and technical issues that are very likely to arise. Having a bespoke solution can be very expensive.
In this post, I share the pros and cons of both ready made and in-house custom built solutions.
Now that you know that your worries about technology can be resolved, you can start using technology to run your safety company or department, no matter how small.
My next blog post will show you how you can use Gsuite to manage your safety department.
